WindOz
macOS · free · native

Windows, exactly where you want them.

WindOz lives in the menu bar. Press a shortcut, drag across a grid, and the window takes that area. Or skip the grid: a hotkey or a drag to the screen edge does it in one move.

Grid · hotkey · snap

Three ways to place a window, one gesture each.

Use whichever is closest to your hands. All three share the same presets, margins and undo.

⌃⌥Space

Grid

A grid opens on every screen. Drag across the cells and the window takes that area, even on another display. Hold ⌥ for a finer grid.

⌃⌥←

Hotkeys

Halves, quarters, thirds, two-thirds, maximize and center, each on its own shortcut. Change any of them, or add your own.

drag

Snap

Drag a window to an edge or a corner and let go. A preview shows where it will land before you release.

Made for every day

Everything a window needs, nothing it doesn't.

No accounts, no subscriptions, no Dock icon. A native app that moves windows well and stays out of the way.

A grid on every screen

Pick rows and columns from 1 to 10. ⌘= and ⌘- change them while the grid is open, and ⌥ doubles them.

Presets you own

Pick a shortcut set, Standard or Oz, or make your own: each preset can have a global shortcut and a single key for use inside the grid. Draw new presets on a grid, then export and import the set.

Snap zones

Ten zones: edges, corners and thirds along the bottom. Each one points to any preset you like. Edges shared with another display stay free.

Undo

⌃⌥⌫ puts the window back where it was. Press it again to swap back.

Across displays

⌃⌥⌘← and ⌃⌥⌘→ send a window to the previous or next screen and keep its proportions.

Margins

Space between windows and around the screen edge, 0 to 300 px. Neighbouring windows are always one margin apart.

Menu bar only

No Dock icon and no window until you ask for one. Launch at login with one switch in Settings.

Private

No accounts, no analytics. Its only network calls are an optional daily check for a new release, which you can turn off, and the download when you install one.

Native and light

AppKit, no Electron, no background polling. Hotkeys wait in the system, so an idle WindOz uses no CPU.

Measured, not promised

Small and quiet by design.

Measured on WindOz 0.1.0 on Apple silicon.

19 MBmemory at idle
0.0%CPU while it waits
4.0 MBfor the whole app
0Accessibility calls per mouse move once a drag is snapping
Install

Ready in a minute.

  1. Download the disk image.
  2. Open it and drag WindOz to Applications. It is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.
  3. Open WindOz and turn it on in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Accessibility. macOS asks every window manager for this; it is how WindOz moves other apps' windows.

Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. On macOS 15 and later, turn off "Drag windows to screen edges to tile" in Desktop & Dock so the two don't compete.

Free, and staying free.

WindOz has no ads, no accounts and no paid tier. If it saves you a few hundred drags a week, a coffee keeps the next version coming.
